The Rt Hon Peter Lilley, MP

Conservative MP for Hitchin and Harpenden:

Peter Lilley is currently a director of Tethys Petroleum Limited and IDOX plc, member of Advisory Board, School of Management, University of Southampton (2002-2009). Mr Lilley was also formerly a Non-Executive Director of Melchior Japan Investment Trust plc, and the JP Morgan Fleming Claverhouse Investment Trust plc. He joined Greenwell Montagu Stockbrokers in 1972, where he headed the oil investment department and was a director (1986-87). He was also previously an economic advisor in developing countries (1966-72).

Mr Lilley was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nigel Lawson (1984-1987). His first ministerial appointment was as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (June 1987), then Financial Secretary to the Treasury (July 1989). He joined Mrs Thatcher's Cabinet as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry 1990-1992 and served as Secretary of State for Social Security 1992-1997. 

He ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party in June 1997 subsequently becoming Shadow Chancellor and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party responsible for overseeing renewal of policy until June 1999. He chaired, alongside Bob Geldof, the Globalization and Global Poverty Policy Group which reported in July 2007.  He is Co-Chair of the All Party Campaign ‘Trade Out of Poverty'.

Mr Lilley is currently Chairman of the Committee of both Houses scrutinising the Draft Financial Services Bill.
